Meet Volunteer Roles
These are the volunteer roles for running a SAIL Swim Meet:
Clerk of Course - Ensure order of swimmers for the meet. Make sure all swimmers are in the correct, event, heat, and lane.
- REQUIRED SAIL training - On-site Training Required.
Clerk of Course Helper - Helping move children from swimmer’s tent to the correct lane and block. There are several checkpoints along the way where a C of C volunteer helps reorganize the swimmers.

Computer Assistant - This person would work alongside the computer operator. You would learn the system for entering swimmers times during a meet and serve help during the meet and as a backup for the computer operator.

Concessions Worker - Serve refreshments in the concessions area during swim meets. Help with set up and clean-up of concession area.

Concession Grill - Home meets only - work the grill for concessions.

Deck Setup for Home Meets - Assist with setting up for home meets. Done the morning of meet.

Hospitality - Prepare and serve refreshments (water/lemonade) to volunteers on the pool deck during swim meets.

Parking Signs - Home Meets ONLY. Place yard signs around neighborhood streets close to pool to direct traffic on swim meet days (using map). SIGNS need to be displayed by noon on swim meet day and then picked up by noon the following day.

Records - Using SAIL guidelines, determine the accurate times for the swimmers using the times recorded on the blue cards.

Referee/Asst Referee - Your principal function is to see that a meet is properly conducted by enforcing the rules and assuring the swimmers of fair competitive, standardized conditions. In order to do an intelligent and conscientious job, you have to know and understand USS and SAIL rules. You are the judge, jury and arbitrator of all problems and protests that arise during a swim meet. A thorough knowledge of the rules and a completely impartial attitude will insure that your decisions are right.

Ribbons - Using SAIL guidelines, place stickers on Woody Creek or SAIL ribbons and file by swimmer name.

Starter - Responsible for ensuring a FAIR start to every race. The starter handles the flow of the meet by clearing the pool after each race, and starting each subsequent race. They are responsible for determining False starts.
- REQUIRED SAIL training – ONLINE training and certification
Stroke and Turn - Ensure that swimmers are performing the strokes legally during each race. Monitor each race and then notify referee of any disqualifications. Must have knowledge of each stroke and be able to learn what would be considered a disqualification during each stroke.

Tent Parents - Monitor swim behavior in the tent area.

Timer - Use stopwatches to record swimmers’ times during each race.

Head Timer - Ensure that each lane is performing their timing responsibilities. Informs the Starter when the timers are ready to proceed with the next race. Monitors each lane and provides assistance when needed in the form of extra watches, or replacing volunteers.
